5 Easy Self-Care Ideas for Busy Moms

Self-Care seems to be the buzz everywhere these days and with Valentine’s Day this week, I thought it was a good time to talk about a little self love! To a busy mom though, the idea of doing anything to take care of yourself and nurture your health and well-being seems like a lofty fantasy!


I mean, how can you possibly fit one more thing in to your already busy schedule between soccer practice drop-off and pick-up, washing uniform for said soccer practice, helping to finish some emergency school project your teenager forgot about until 10pm the night before… not to mention your own work demands and managing a busy family household with more moving pieces than a 5,000 piece puzzle?!


The truth is however, self-care is a MUST for everyone but especially busy moms (we know, we can almost feel the eye rolls). We give so much of our time and energy to taking care of others in our lives, that we often put our own needs last.  We are the first to give up our workout time, to push aside our work deadline then stay up well past midnight after everyone else is in bed to finish it, or reschedule that cut and color to save a little on the family budget. And then we wonder why we find ourselves at  urgent care at midnight with a 103 fever or feeling like we just might explode if one more family member complains about their mashed potatoes being lumpy or their chicken being covered in “that sauce” at dinner!


Here are 5 easy (we promise!) ideas for self-care to nurture mind, body and spirit and to help you feel ready to take on the world, or at least take on whatever your toddler or teenager throws at you for the day!


  1. Buy Flowers.

    It doesn’t have to be an expensive bouquet here. We’re talking about the $6 bouquet at Trader Joe’s or the local grocery store. Buy yourself something to brighten your day. You don’t have to wait for a special occasion or for someone else to buy these for you. Stop by the grocery store flower department and pick out the bunch of flowers that makes you smile. Whether they’re the beautiful spring tulips or the obnoxiously bright dyed daisies, buy them! If they make you happy, you deserve them.

  2. Say Goodnight.

    I know… I know… who has time to go to bed at a decent hour?! However, your body needs sleep to recharge and to keep you healthy to tackle the day.  This is perhaps the one item on the list that I am TERRIBLE about! We’re not talking about going to bed at 8pm with your toddler but we do mean set a consistent bedtime and try to stick to it. My goal is to get to bed by 11:30 each night!

  3. Paint Your Toes.

    Feel free to insert another simple beauty luxury but for me, the one thing that makes me feel relaxed and luxurious is a great pedicure. I’ve hated my ugly feet for as long as I can remember and have suffered from various foot pain and ailments almost my whole life so to have someone massage my feet and paint my toes so I feel better about them is the ultimate self-care. My budget and schedule don’t allow a monthly pedicure at the salon so I keep a stock of my favorite Essie nail polish on hand in bright, fun colors and an electric pumice stone to smooth my feet after wearing heels too much each month!

  4. Sip in Style. 

    There’s nothing like a favorite glass of wine in a fun, wine glass or a relaxing cup of coffee or tea in a heartwarming mug for some easy self-care. Right after my divorce, making a cup of coffee with vanilla creamer was my one “luxury” I picked to brighten my day each morning. It’s still a favorite of mine and I have an affinity for coffee mugs because of it. It’s something simple but it makes me smile and always does the trick. Pick your favorite tea, coffee or wine and make time each day to sip in style.

  5. Sweat it Out. 

    Yeah, yeah… we know, you have less than zero time to workout. But working out for 30 minutes even 2-3 times a week can do wonders for your mind and body. A quick run instantly clears my mind and helps me manage all the pent up anxiety from my daily to do list. With all the technology today, you don’t even have to leave your house. If you don’t have time for a quick run or walk around the block, try the new Beachbody Online workouts or one of Barre3‘s online barre workouts available in 10, 30 or 60-minute routines.
