The Met Gala is undoubtedly the fashion red carpet event of the year. Hosted by American Vogue‘s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, the annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art coincides with the opening of the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition. This year’s exhibition featured Japanese fashion designer, Rei Kawakubu, and so the theme of this year’s gala was Comme des Garcons.
And the red carpet did not disappoint. The biggest names in Hollywood and the fashion industry posed for photogs in some truly amazing avant garde looks, a lot of strategic cut-outs and some very barely there designs.
Because it’s unlikely that we will ever have an occasion for a couture gown (though we’re not giving up on that dream), we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite red carpet trends and where to shop them to re-create a more functional, everyday look.
As seen on Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ashley Graham, a one-shoulder top or dress makes a chic and sexy statement.
Style tip: wear your hair up to elongate your neck and skip wearing a necklace.
Claire Danes, Katie Holmes and Kate Bosworth all brought some extra ruffle drama to the red carpet. While ruffles can be dramatic, they can also add a sweet, feminine detail to an otherwise simple piece.
Bold Colors and Prints
Go bold or go home. Make a statement like Zendaya, Emma Roberts, Rose Byrne and Miranda Kerr with a bold color or print.
Spotted on Kate Hudson, Lily Aldridge and Kim Kardashian West, the white dress is definitely having a moment. Avoid looking like a bride by wearing a midi or knee-length dress, or opt for a simple, looser cut maxi.
