I love the cool, trendy dress code of music award shows, and the American Music Awards (AMAs) is the perfect blend of formality and edginess. Last night’s red carpet did not disappoint. There were a few trends that really stood out on the red carpet (sheer cut-outs, leather details, sequins…), but most noticeably was all the celeb children. As a mom who often has a toddler companion at adult dinners and events, I loved this.
My favorite part of the night, though, was Diana Ross’ performance to accept her lifetime achievement award. She not only walked the red carpet with her family, but she also invited them on stage with her during her performance. Watching her grandchildren dance and sing along (and Ashlee Simpson and Evan Ross’ daughter adorably pick her nose) was everything.
Below are a few of our favorite red carpet moments from last night’s AMA Awards.
Pink was on fire last night. Her tiered tulle gown was surprisingly feminine and pretty, but the bold red color and blue floral details added just the right amount of edge and playfulness. She could not have picked a more perfect silhouette or color, and I can’t get enough. I also cannot get enough of her face during Xtina’s Whitney tribute.
Shorts don’t usually make my best dressed list, but Yara Shahidi changed my mind last night. Her embellished Prada shorts, styled with an olive trench, gray knee-high socks and silver heels are glam meets edgy meets preppy. The combination of colors, textures and styles would be hard for nearly anyone else to pull off, but I’m glad she took the risk.
Kelly Rowland’s red carpet look was a little extra in all the right ways. Her velvet Galia Lahav gown had all the details, and I don’t know how, but it worked. The billowy sheer sleeves, floral embroidery and laces helped tone down the formality of the velvet fabric and sultry silhouette.
The internet was quick to notice Christina’s fresh-faced look for her AMAs Whitney tribute, which redeemed her mediocre performance. Her slicked back hair and au naturel makeup were a dramatic departure from her full-glam look. I love Xtina, but I’m a fan of this more subdued look.
Kelly Clarkson not only rocked both of her performances last night, but she also wowed on the red carpet. Her stunning off-the-shoulder black and gold gown was the perfect silhouette for her. And how sweet is River Rose in her red carpet dress?
Ashlee Simpson and Family
This photo is #familypicturegoals. Head to toe, Ashlee’s retro look is perfection, but this ensemble red carpet styling is my favorite look of the night. I love the shades of berry and gold that were carried throughout all four looks, and I love how two-year-old Jagger stole the show once again (sorry, Diana!).
