Summer Trends: Save vs Splurge

- General Fabulousness, Let's Spend Some Money

It’s summer and that means it’s time to update your wardrobe with a few of the season’s hottest trends! And there comes a time in every Mamanista’s life where you should absolutely buy the shoes (or purse, or jewelry, or whatever your “thing” is). But most of the time, we mamas are on a tight budget so here are a few of our current summer favorite high-end splurge-worthy pieces and their save-worthy, cheaper alternatives. Choose whichever one makes you and your wallet happy – this is a judgment-free zone!

Fringe Sleeveless Top

Alice Blue Fringe Sleeveless Top, $58 vs Umgee Sleeveless Fringe Top, $18

The Verdict: Both of these tops are beautiful! We’re definitely in love! The Alice Blue top is currently only available through Stitch Fix so we say go for the Shop TMM version and Save! Why delay gratification when you don’t have to?! Plus it saves you$40!.

Pom Pom Straw Beach Tote

Kate Spade Spice Things Up Beach Tote, $199.66 vs Straw Pom Pom Beach Tote, $58.58

The Verdict: While we love all things Kate Spade, but we think the Amazon Prime Straw Pom Pom Beach Tote is just as cute and on trend and the lack of graphic makes it a bit more versatile for years to come plus at $150 it’s a no brainer for us! Save on this one and by the cheaper alternative!

Embroidered Beach Tote

Trina Turk Barbados Embroidered Tote, $188 vs Merona Tropical Leaf Embroidered Tote, $34.99

The Verdict: While Trina Turk is Trina Turk and we love her bright, bold colors and designs on everything, a savings of $150 just can’t be denied! The Target Tropical Leaf Tote is equally as vacation worthy and leaves room left over in the budget for a week’s worth of groceries! Save on this one and by the cheaper alternative!

Straw Embellished Handbag

Kate Spade Belle Bow Straw Handbag, $248 vs Bueno Straw Flower Handbag, $30

The Verdict: While we love all things Kate Spade, the $218 savings is kind of hard to argue with. The quality of the Kate Spade bag is higher but all straw handbags are a bit more delicate than other bags. That makes one more reason to save on this one and by the cheaper alternative!

Navy Striped Beach Tote

Mar Y Sol Navy Striped Beach Tote, $129 vs Merona Navy Stripe Beach Tote, $34

The Verdict: Mar Y Sol is a designer brand we were admittedly not as familiar with but all the celebrity mom blogs are raving about it. We love this nautical theme and the contrast stripe pattern of the original designer. The price tag, makes us pause though for a bag we are going to lug back and forth to the pool and beach! Save on this one and by the cheaper alternative for everyday use! If you have a special trip ahead or plan to use it more as a purse, then we think the splurge options is the way to go. The quality makes it feel like a designer handbag rather than a straw beach tote!

Sparkle Square Studs

Kate Spade Square Stud Earrings, $32 vs BP Square Stud Earrings, $7.98 for two pairs!

The Verdict: We love these because SPARKLE! Hello! Besides the obvious appeal of sparkle and glitter, these square studs are a bit larger than typical studs which give them added pop. They’re easy to wear and work well with work, weekend, and date night outfits. The Kate Spade options won’t break the bank if you’re a die hard Kate Spade fan. However, the quality of both are great and we say Save and go for the BP set from Nordstrom. You get 2 pairs of these versatile studs for under $8! That’s a win all around in our book!

Blush Tassel Earrings

BaubleBar Pinata Tassel Earrings, $34 vs SugarFix Tassel Earrings, $7.78

The Verdict: Tassel Earrings are super trendy this summer! They’re a great way to add an instant bit of pop to work wear or everyday weekend basics. Blush tassel earrings are an easy way to enter in to the whole tassel and pom pom trend lightly. They’re uber versatile and easy to mix in with other jewelry and accessories. The BaubleBar option won’t break the bank at $38 so if you’re in love with the originals we say go for it! However, we own the SugarFix target version of BaubleBar and we can’t say enough great things about them! At under $8 that saves you enough money to buy a few cocktails for the pool this weekend!

Cut-Out Scallop Swimsuit

Kate Spade Scalloped One-Piece, $150 vs Cupshe “Cut To It” One-Piece, $23.99

The Verdict: We’re not gonna lie! We’ve had our eye on this Kate Spade Scalloped One-Piece for awhile now! This classy yet sexy one-piece makes us dream of romantic resort getaways with our significant others complete with beachy cocktails in our hands, and hours of quiet time at the beach! Since reality means most of our weekends are really spent chasing kids at the pool and picking up juice boxes, $150 seems a bit much to spend on a swimsuit. Cupshe answered our resort dreams with their $23.99 knock-off of the Kate Spade classic. Sizing can be a bit tricky so call or check out the size charts and read the reviews on Amazon but the Cupshe version is definitely worth the “Save” on this one!

Do Not Disturb Floppy Beach Hat

Eugenia Kim Do Not Disturb Beach Hat, $498 vs Funky Junque’s Do Not Disturb Beach Hat (available in 18 sayings), $19.99

The Verdict: We love everything about these floppy beach hats with entertaining sayings embroidered on the brim, except the price of the designer option! These are definitely trendy this summer and as with all things trendy for a season, we recommend “Save” on this purchase! Plus, the Amazon Prime version comes in a choice of 18 sayings so you can customize it to your personality! We still recommend the “Do Not Disturb” … a busy mama can hope can’t she?!!

Pom Pom Gladiator Sandals

Sam Edelman Pom Pom Gladiator Sandals, $110 vs Madden Girl Pom Pom Gladiator Sandals, $39.97

The Verdict: Pom Pom Statement Sandals are another huge trend this summer! While both of these are high quality and fit all the check boxes of the statement sandal trend, we recommend sticking with the “Save” Madden Girl option! They actually offer a bit more support in the soles which is helpful when chasing little ones this summer! The peace sign and coin tassels accents make them feel a bit more youthful than their designer counterparts but we’re okay with that to save our budgets $70!
