During the summer, I want to look like a swimsuit ad: tousled beach waves, highlighted to perfection; a sun-kissed complexion; and glowing, bronzed skin. Unfortunately, even models need a team of beauty pros and a few hours in the stylist’s chair to perfect that “natural” look. And mama ain’t got time for that.
So, here are a few tricks I’ve learned over the years to save time and money and look my best when enjoying a day in the sun.
Look for a Tinted Moisturizer with SPF
Some of the best beauty advice I’ve ever received has been to wear sunscreen every day (though I didn’t actually heed that advice until I was about 25 and had spent entirely too much time sleeping in tanning beds during college). Anyway, the good news is that it is never too late to add this important step to your beauty routine, and it’s especially important in the hot summer months.
To simplify my routine, I use a CC cream with SPF to protect my skin and add a layer of light coverage. Many people (including me) shy away from sunscreen because they worry that it will only is oily and shine is a constant battle (especially in humid summer heat). Try adding a primer before applying your SPF and always be sure to use oil-free moisturizers.
Be sure to use sunscreen on the rest of your body, too! Check out our post on sunless tanners for our favorite products to pull off the perfect all-over faux glow.
Go Double Duty with a Lip and Cheek Stain
Another double-duty product that I can’t live without in the summer is a lip and cheek stain. Stains feel light on your skin, but don’t let that fool you. They are long-lasting and can withstand a long day in the sun. Blend the tint directly over your tinted moisturizer or foundation to create sun-kissed cheeks, and dab some on your lips to give a little color to your pout.
Skip the Mascara and Tint Those Lashes
I don’t know why it took me so long to try this, because mascara would totally be one of the three items that I would choose to have with me on a deserted island. HOWEVER, the only thing worse than having raccoon eyes is wearing waterproof mascara. And this is why tinting your lashes is the best thing ever.
You can have this done at most hair salons (shout out to Christina at Mirror Mirror Beaute Bar!), and it only takes about 45 minutes from start to finish. I actually had my eyebrows waxed while I waited for the dye to set on my lashes. The color lasts about 4-6 weeks, but mine was closer to 8 weeks. The key to longevity is to avoid cleansers or makeup removers with oil in them.
Beach Hair Every Day
Messy beach waves are my favorite lazy girl hair style. Simply give a generous spritz of texturizing spray to your wet hair, scrunch, air dry and go.
To pull this look off with hair as fine as mine, I have to curl my hair with a wand the night before, hair spray it, sleep on it, and then use volumizing dry shampoo in the morning before touching up a few strands with the wand. I’ll give you one guess how often this look happens on pool days with a toddler … until I discovered Living Proof Perfect Hair Day. Apply this product in the shower, and then braid your wet hair before bed. Wake up to the perfect beach wave. #wokeuplikethis
Protect With Purple
It almost doesn’t feel like summer without some blonde in your hair. Whether you have some thin balayage highlights or a full head of blonde hair, you can keep your color bright and increase the time between visits to the salon by using a purple toning shampoo once or twice/week.
