The 3-Piece Rule is a widely used rule of thumb by stylists and in the retail world that helps build more complete, pulled together outfits. It’s actually super simple to pull off… even before your morning cup of coffee!
Piece #1 (top) + Piece #2 (bottom) + Layered Piece #3 = Outfit Magic!
So what is this magical 3rd Layered Piece we speak of? This piece is the cherry on top, the icing on the cake, the mystical unicorn, the free gift with purchase if you will. It’s the piece that ties the whole outfit together and it can be any of the following:
- Outerwear: jackets, blazers, coats, ponchos, or vests
- Accessories: bold necklaces, belts, hats, scarves, statement jewelry
- Sweaters: cardigans, pullovers, sleeveless cardigans
Once you select your 3 pieces, add in necessities for the day – shoes, work bag, etc. to complete your outfit. Now let’s see what happened when put the 3-Piece Rule to the test!
