In Brutally Honest Reviews, we give you our honest opinions on the things we purchase with our own hard-earned money. This month’s Brutally Honest Review is the October Ipsy Glam Bag. For $10 a month, Ipsy will send you five products in a custom designed bag. You fill out a short survey so they can customize your bag as best as possible, so your bag may be different than mine.
The October Ipsy Glam Bag Reveal
Each Ipsy Glam Bag is shipping in their signature magenta bubble mailer, and let me tell you, I have zero chill when I see that thing in my mailbox. I go into put-the-baby-in-the-exersaucer-and-turn-the-TV-on-for-the-girls-so-I-can-have-5-minutes mode.
Each month features a new bag that represents the month’s theme. Some month’s are collaborations with designers or artists. The October one plays off the “Black Magic” theme, mixing Halloween icons on a light pink background. I’ll be honest, the majority of my Ipsy bags are immediately “gifted” to my daughters to fill with crayons, squirt guns, and other oddities, but mama’s holding on to this one.
Here’s the contents of the October bag. At first glance, not too shabby for $10.
Trust Fund Beauty’s “Gimme Good Face” Primer
I love a good face primer. The right one can work magic, including making your makeup stay on longer, shrinking your pores and making you not so tired-looking, which is an eternal goal of mine. The right primer can also be very expensive, and this one is a reasonably priced $25. This specific item is currently on pre-order and scheduled to ship in December or January.
Beaute Basics Satin Taupe Eyeshadow
For some reason, the word “Beaute” really annoys me. Are ya too fancy for a “y”?! However, the color on this one was pretty great, so I decided to put my nonsensical annoyance aside for the sake of beauty. I’m also looking for the perfect neutral shade, and this one looks really pretty on.
Sally’s Box Aqua Moist Gel Cream
File this one under “meh” because that’s how I feel about it. I’m sure the good folks at Sally’s Box where really excited when they made this one, but I have no need for it, especially at $45. I am firmly Team Obagi when it comes to my skincare routine, and have no need to change things up.
Indi Beauty Buttercream Antioxidant Lip Scrub
I have what you would call a chapstick problem. I must always have a tube on my person at all times, and I’m constantly re-applying during the day. I recently came across an article touting the importance of exfoliating your lips in order to hold in moisture, so I was super excited to see this in my October Ipsy Glam Bag. I was even more excited when I tried it out – the sample is rather large, and a little goes a long way. And it works! Plus it smells really nice, which is always a bonus, and retails for the very reasonable price of $11.99.
Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Foundation
This one was a little perplexing to me. I’ve heard great things about the brand, but foundation that I didn’t get to try on and match to my very pale skin tone makes me nervous. The packaging boasts that it comes in 40 different shades, which only adds to my feeling that this color ain’t going to work for me. And at $43 a bottle, I’m not sure if I want it to work all that well.
The Brutally Honest Verdict
For $10, I received a makeup bag that I’m actually keeping for myself instead of giving to my girls, two products I love, two products that I’ll try out and one that’s going into the guest bathroom jar (sorry, good people at Sally’s Box).
