At Home with The Modern Mamanistas

Featured, life, Mom Life

There’s no question as we move into the umpteenth week of social-distancing that we miss going places and seeing people a lot. We’ve spent a lot of time indoors recently so we thought we’d share a few of the things we’ve been up to lately.

WHAT I’M MAKING

I’m baking A LOT! With three hungry teenagers in the house and lots of time staring at the pantry, we go through snacks and sweets faster than I can bake them. We’ve made birthday cakes, chocolate chip cookies, banana bread, rice krispie treats, homemade cinnamon rolls and more while social distancing. Most have been adventures in experimenting with ingredients since not everything is available in our grocery store each week, but it’s been fun! The absolute favorite in our family is this recipe for Chocolate Chip Cookies from Joanna Gaines.

HOW I’M STAYING BUSY

Weeks upon weeks of social isolation has hit my weekly gym routine hard. Working out at home is definitely not my strong suit. I’ve found daily walks with my dog, Murphy, and weekly runs with my family really helpful. Thankfully we live in an area with lots of trails and paths that allow us to spread out from others to get our walks and runs in and see a little bit of life while we’re out and about.

WHAT I’M WATCHING & READING

I’m just starting to read Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman from Reese Witherspoon’s Book list. I’ve got a whole list in cue though. I’m trying to sit down each afternoon after work to read for an hour and decompress. I’m also super excited to tune in to watch Labor of Love on FOX starring my sister Kristy. The reality show follows her quest to find love, marriage, and a baby carriage. It’s a bit surreal to see your sissy on screen, but I’m so happy she has a chance to inspire others by sharing her story with the world. Follow all the fun here.

WHAT I’M WEARING

As the weather warms here in Georgia, I find myself reaching for my favorite denim shorts from Old Navy and comfortable tees and cozy sweatshirts for air-conditioned indoors and cooler mornings walking the dog. I’m also wearing these white Birkenstock dupes from Amazon on repeat! They are seriously comfortable and easy to throw on at home or to take the dogs for a walk when I want my toes to breathe a bit.

WHAT I’M MAKING

With the premiere of Labor of Love, my family and I thought it would be fun to put together a menu around each week’s show theme. Making the same food and drinks even when we’re miles apart is a great way to celebrate as a family each week. Pop Pop’s Mac and Cheese is a favorite at family holiday meals and get togethers, and made an appearance on the southern inspired menu for the show’s premiere.

HOW I’M STAYING BUSY

I’m still working remotely from home, so in between my regular work schedule and managing all the exciting things that come with the premiere of Labor of Love, there’s not a ton of time leftover. I try to take some time each day, however, to do some yoga at home. I miss my yoga studio but this is the next best thing and I find it centers me and clears my head at the end of the day so I can relax and breathe a bit.

WHAT I’M WATCHING & READING

Being a Chicago girl myself, I’ve loved watching Michelle Obama’s Becoming on Netflix. It’s so inspirational and I love her message about not being afraid to reach high and to be seen. Here’s a trailer if you want to check it out.

WHAT I’M WEARING

My wardrobe is definitely a bit more laid back these days. My “go to” for days at home is usually a pair of my favorite Madewell button front jeans and a video conference ready blouse. I miss the days of going in to the office and being out and about, but pairing my denim with a dressier top for work calls helps balance everything out a bit.
