Summer brings with it more flexible schedules and dress codes at the office! Amen to that! But for many of us, that leaves us wondering how to walk the line between summer casual and still look professional for work! Below are a few ways to flex your weekend and work wardrobes so you still feel pulled together and professional while rocking your denim at the office!
We love a good distressed pair of jeans more than anyone but if you’re office is just now embracing a more casual, denim-friendly work environment, it’s best to leave the distressed jeans for the weekend. We recommend finding a good pair of well, fitting non-distressed skinny jeans in an ankle length to easily mix and match with more polished tops and office-appropriate pumps. These Articles of Society jeans are great-fitting, budget-friendly favorites of mine. Stick with a medium to dark wash to keep the look more polished. Wide-leg trouser style denim is also a great office-friendly option here if skinny jeans aren’t your thing.
Embellish a Bit.
Everyone needs at least one pair of jeans that spark a conversation and feel just a bit out of your comfort zone. Embroidered and embellished jeans are everywhere this season, including Anthropologie, Stitch Fix, Target and Old Navy so it’s a good chance to try the trend at a variety of budget price points. Pair these jeans with a solid blouse or blazer and neutral strappy heels or classic pumps (remember, we consider leopard a neutral too!).
Pump It Up!
Denim immediately feels more casual and we still associate it with weekends more than work week. That said, if you’re still feeling a bit unsure or if your office is still slow to embrace the denim to work trend, stick with classic pumps paired with your denim. This is one 80s trend, we’re glad to see come back around again! Stick with skinny jeans to keep the lines of your outfit clean and polished. Strappy block heels or kitten heels work here too but be sure the lines are clean and fall more on the delicate, professional side of the trend.
Color Your World.
Colored denim is back in a big way! Again, stick with skinny or straight cut versions of these like the cult favorite Old Navy Rockstar to keep the look polished and pair easily with dressed up blazers and work blouses. Olive, coral, fuschia, poppy, lemon, emerald, mint and royal blue are all easy colors to mix and match with office staples like striped tops, white lace blouses and work friendly blazers.
Embrace the Mullet! Yes, We’re Serious… Kind Of!.
When it comes to making denim office appropriate, think business in the front, or in this case up top, and party in the back (on the bottom). It sounds crazy but it works! Pair your party pants (aka jeans) with a polished blazer, feminine floral or lace blouse, or your favorite button down. Add classic pumps and delicate jewelry like the favorite Kendra Scott Rayne necklace or Stella & Dot engravable tag necklace to finish the look.
