By February, I’m over winter. The novelty of wearing boots and sweaters is long gone, I’m tired of all my outfits being hidden by coats, and my skin is drier than the Sahara. Literally. I dreamed the other night that I was trapped in a desert sand storm only to wake up and realize I seriously need a humidifier in my room.
Since I am just a little obsessed with beauty and skincare, I have an arsenal of products to help combat the cold, dry air and keep my skin hydrated and looking dewy. Here are my five favorite thirst-quenching skincare products.
My friend, Ashley, is the best procurer of things I know. She is also really well-traveled. I benefit from both. *wink*
After a trip to France, she began introducing me to some of her new-found favorite French pharmacy products. This skin cream made it into a sample box she sent me, and it’s pretty amazing. The luxurious cream feels a little heavy when first applied, but it quickly absorbs into your skin without leaving an oily feeling behind. Use it anywhere on your face or body – even your lips! – to heal dry, irritated skin. It’s safe for little ones, too, and works miracles on my toddler’s Keratosis pilaris. Plus, you’ll feel just a little more posh with this sitting on your counter.
I love to take long, hot showers, but hot water can cause dry skin. Thankfully, this shower butter can help. Not only does it feel like butta on your skin, but the Nargis flower scent will make you feel like you’re in a wellness spa. Again, Gwyneth would approve. I know $45 seems like a lot to spend on “soap.” A little goes a long way, and you can enjoy the hydrating benefits only using it once or twice each week.
Every now and then, I’ll look down at my daughter holding my hand and realize how old my hands look next to hers. In fact, I’ve had to stop writing this to apply lotion because I’m getting a little self-conscious about it! I don’t sell R+F, but I am a fan of some of their products, including this hand treatment that moisturizes and reduces the dreaded signs of aging. The tube is a little small for $34, so I only apply every morning and night to make it last me about three months. Because my hands stay really dry this time of year, I also keep the Vaseline Intensive Care lotion in my bag for moisturizing throughout the day.
Toning is an important step in completing the cleansing process. And toners can serve different purposes – whether it be helping to tighten pores and remove excess oil or re-balance after cleansing. The Herbivore Rose Hibiscus Coconut Water smells divine, and the rose water works really well to hydrate skin and better prepare it for a serum or moisturizer. I also like to use it throughout the day to refresh my skin … it makes me feel this much closer to being Gwyneth Paltrow.
And finally … my secret weapon to a glowing complexion is Beautycounter’s tinted moisturizer, Dew Skin. If I were stranded on a deserted island and could only have one beauty product in my bag, it’d be this multi-purpose product. In addition to its hydrating qualities, Dew Skin also offers sun protection (SPF 20), sheer coverage to even skin tone, and a lot of powerful ingredients, like Vitamin C and sodium hyaluronate, to firm and improve your complexion. What I love most is what it doesn’t contain: any questionable or harmful chemicals (think phthalates and parabens).
