As a kid, Black Friday was almost more magical than Christmas. It’s the only day of the year when I’m a morning person. The smell of leather bags and designer fragrances in the department stores, the hustle and bustle of eager holiday shoppers at 6 a.m., the glow of giant mall Christmas ornaments… it’s what I imagine Heaven will be like.
Today, most of that magic is gone for me. I have a hard time accepting that Black Friday now starts during Thanksgiving dinner and that the weekend news is usually dominated by videos of shoppers fighting and trampling one another. Nonetheless, I’ll still be out in hopes that I can wrap up my Christmas shopping (see what I did there?). So, we’ve pulled together a few Mamanista tips for saving money – and your sanity – while Black Friday shopping.
1. Make a list.
It’s like Target shopping on steroids. You can’t go in without a list, ladies. My list usually includes gifts and personal needs and wishes, as well as my budget and stores to shop. Need ideas? Check out our holiday gift guides.
2. Do your research.
Retailers are already sharing their Black Friday sales. Check the sales with the items on your list to see where you can save the most dough. And because some sales are staggered throughout the day, you’ll do better if you map out your stops.
3. Pre-Shop Online
Many Black Friday sales are available online, too – some start before the stores even open! If that’s the case, go ahead and add your items to your cart, set yourself a reminder for when the sale starts, and then complete your purchase once the sale starts. Your family won’t even know you stepped away from your cooking responsibilities to shop.
4. Dress for Success
With the large crowds, long lines and heavier than usual traffic, the last thing you want to slow you down is your outfit. We recommend layers, as you’ll be in and out of stores all day. Try pairing your favorite pair of jeans with a graphic tee and fashion sneakers, and adding layers appropriate for your climate. Last year, Sarah shared a 30-second tip for styling your tee that takes your look from casual to cool.
Happy shopping, Mamanistas!
